Narrative Drawing

Painting Technique | Insight

Much of the preliminary setup within my painting involves direct drawing in either dry media or oil/brush. Working primarily with an indirect method, I’ll normally establish a monochromatic underpainting or combined grisaille as the framework for the initial color layer. See process video for preview.

Depending on the degree of finish, the ensuing layers of color focus on increased refinement/detail, achieved through both glazing and scumbling techniques.

Oil sketches use a more tactile approach with direct paint application. Similar to classic Alla Prima painting, I’ll normally completed sketches in a single session using a wet into wet process and combined wiping/scraping technique..

The objective is to become familiar with either the sitter or subject matter while gauging the desired palette. Multiple oils sketches/studies may be completed before moving into a more involved painting process…

Drawing Technique

Hand toning and staining my surfaces is a regular process designed to age/distress high quality drawing papers, otherwise perceived as bright white. Varied temperature shifts are built up through transparent wash layers of permanent ink, which act as a ground for the use of traditional dry media.

As the drawing develops, the subtle degrees of tonality are visible beneath delicate layers of dry media. See process video for drawing sample preview.
