Does It Match the Couch?  A Juried Exploration of Color
June 1 - Sept 2, 2018

To match or not to match, that is the question! There are varying answers, viewpoints and even more questions surrounding that age old query.  Should you buy a piece of art because it will compliment your décor or because you like it?  Is it taboo to commission an artist to create an artwork to compliment the color scheme of a room? How do interior designers select art for the spaces they design? How does color theory play a role in the creation of art?  How does the color palette of a space reflect your mood?

"Pewter Chair" a custom silkscreen on leather designed and constructed in collaboration with Edmund Derrick, is part of this summer exhibition, coupled with select illustrations from the popular "In Similar Fashion'" series.

The collection of illustrations are available for purchase in a complete hard cover edition. Visit the book page to preview.

MONMOUTH MUSEUM | JURIED WATERCOLOR EXHIBITION

Monmouth Museum - Main Gallery: Lincroft, New Jersey

Monmouth Museum - Main Gallery: Lincroft, New Jersey

The Golden Scandal is currently featured in The Monmouth Museum's Juried Watercolor Exhibition, Traditional to Modern.

Duplicity cloaked in eroticism, a well-executed plan in high stakes operations.  Alluring in her every movement, reptilian markings camouflage a prominent stiletto designed to directly penetrate.

- R. Derrick

Using a combination of self-directed photography, life observation and archived source materials,  The Golden Scandal was intended to personify fashionable accessory beyond narrative still life.  After a series of successful color studies were executed, the desired proportions were drawn freehand onto a final piece of hot pressed watercolor paper.  Delicate graphite contours were refined to set the framework for a multi-layering technique of gouache, ink and aquarelle pencil.

MONTSERRAT GALLERY | INSPIRED VIEWS: GROUP EXHIBITION

Monserrat Gallery: Beverly, Massachusetts

Monserrat Gallery: Beverly, Massachusetts

It was a privilege to meet Juror, Ethan Berry, also Senior Seminar Coordinator and Professor of Fine Arts at Montserrat College of Art.  I was honored to be acknowledged in his statement during the reception event and further selected for a Jurors Prize among an impressive roster of studio art professionals.

Entitled "At Attention," this work conveys a sense of emergence, and was completed in connection with a more comprehensive portrait in oil. The softer modeling within the anatomy contrasts a firmer demeanor, as the subject asserts herself within an atmospheric space. Portrayed in a classical composition, her natural posture couples the literal military elements while complimenting the absolute strengths of women in the arts.

MONMOUTH MUSEUM - NILSON GALLERY | MEMBERS MINIATURES: BIG ART IN SMALL PACKAGES

Monmouth Museum - Nilson Gallery: Lincroft, New Jersey

The Monmouth Museum exhibits a diverse collection of small works in their Members Miniature: Big Art in Small Packages, opening. All works will be on display in the Nilson Gallery until March 12, 2017.

A miniature portrait with a grand persona, “Center Stage” spotlights the authentic talent and confidence of natural performers. Poised and direct, the subject engages her audience with little more than a gaze, as she emerges through the overhead lighting to reveal her presence. Using a combination of self directed photography and observational sketches, this portrait was directly executed onto a toned sketch book page. A soft application of graphite powder provided the base structure and underdrawing for the built up of carbon and graphite pencils. Selected areas were further heightened with white charcoal.

HALL OF GOVERNORS, NY | GOVERNOR DAVID A. PATERSON: PORTRAIT UNVEILING CEREMONY

DAP portrait unveiling.jpg

The 55th Governor of New York State has a permanence in the New York State Capital building, hanging in the Hall of Governors chronological timeline.  Portrait artist, Roger Derrick was truly honored to have been selected and worked closely with former Governor David Paterson.  Collectively, subject and artist brought a shared vision to life in the continuing tradition of portraying New York State Officials. Derrick also had the privilege of meeting New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, who acknowledged his painting in the opening address at the unveiling ceremony on March 2, 2014.

"The intention of Governor Paterson's portrait goes beyond the mere likeness of this distinctly unique man, as we considered a range of possibilities from the onset.  The inclusion of a conceptual undertone further added to an otherwise traditional narrative."

"Alongside his predecessors, Mr. Paterson's portrait accompanies these fellow governors within the traditional fashion suited for the Hall's motif.  As his inclusion into the Hall's chronological timeline was well anticipated, the portrait further invites the viewer to witness Governor Paterson as both the man and the messenger.  More than a privilege, it was an honorable experience to work with such an individual."

"Amidst the symbolism, the painting also depicts an adjacent cane topped with the head of an american eagle.  Aside from the direct connection to Governors Paterson's personal message, the keen vision of our national bird is emblematic of this man's consciousness."

- R. Derrick
